Interior Painting Tips and Advice

Painting a room can easily freshen it up and give it a new look instantly, but many homeowners dread interior painting. If you know what to do and how to paint in the most efficient manner, painting the inside of your home is not that bad. Here are some basic interior painting tips and advice for your next painting project in your home.

1. Don’t try to prep the area and paint it all in one day. You will only feel rushed and that can lead to a bad paint job. Instead, set aside a day when you can prep the space for painting. This can even be done a few days ahead if it is a room that is not used that much. The preparation day should include such things as taping the walls, laying down drop clothes, moving the furniture, and gathering all the painting supplies in the room.

2. Never try to paint over damaged walls. Before you even try to paint a room, you should look over the walls and fix any cracks or holes there may be. You can easily fix cracks and holes with drywall kits and sanding. Be sure to do this at least a day before you paint so that the drywall plaster can dry, and you have time to sand down the area as well.

3. Be sure that you choose the best brushes for the paint job. If you are using an oil-based paint, then go with natural bristles on the brush. If you are using a water-based or latex paint, then you need to buy synthetic bristled brushes, as they work the best to paint an even coat on the wall. If you have a large space to paint, then you will want to use foam rollers for the bigger areas. Then buy smaller brushes to paint around the trim and windows.

4. If you want a professional look on your walls, then you definitely want to use a primer before painting the walls. A primer just makes the paint go on so much more even and avoids possible tainting of the color from a previous wall color. You can even have your primer tinted to match your base coat color, which may help you avoid a second coat of base color on the walls.

5. Be sure that you use painter’s blue tape for any areas that you don’t want to get paint on such as doorway frames, trim, and windows. When applied to a smooth surface, the tape will not allow the paint to seep into the areas that you don’t want it to go. When the paint has dried, you can simply remove the tape, and you don’t have to worry about any of the paint coming with it.

6. Have plenty of old rags for any mistakes that may happen. It is inevitable that you may drop some paint on the trim or your brush may hit something that it shouldn’t on the wall.

7. Make sure that you use even strokes when painting to get an even coat. Be sure that you have plenty of natural light in the room to see where you are painting and any areas that you may have missed.

8. Be sure to keep any leftover paint for any future touch-ups or fixes. If you don’t want to keep the large paint can around for a small amount of paint, then pour the leftover paint into a glass jar with a tight lid. Be sure to label the jar the exact color of the paint, the room it was used in, and the date.

Painting the interior of your home doesn’t have to be scary. Simply follow these easy tips and you can be on your way to changing the décor of your home in no time.

Wall Painting Tips

Paint and everyday household items can create beautiful walls. How about putting brown paper bags on your wall? How about using a comb to create a textured look? You can create unique beautiful wall treatments with both of these.

The traditional brown paper bags you grew up with can be used in a number of ways to create amazing wall treatments. We will talk about two different uses for brown paper bags and paint.

The first option is to use them as wall paper. First you take the brown bags (or you can buy rolls of brown paper), tear them into different sized shapes, and then crumple them up. Keep a few with straight edges for the ceiling and any place that might need a straight edge.

Use wallpaper paste and adhere the paste to the paper (or the wall, or both) and randomly apply each piece slightly overlapping them to the wall. Do not try to straighten out too much, you want that crumpled look to give the wall texture. After it has dried it is now time to have fun, it is time to paint. You can paint it with one single color; or do any kind of faux painting. You have a great canvas with the crumpled paper as a textured backdrop for your paint.

My suggestion to enhance the look, after you have finished painting the wall always use either a metallic paint, darker color paint, or lighter color paint. Any color that is a contrast to the main color painted. Lightly go over the wall rubbing on the contrast color, less is more you only want to highlight the texture created by the paper
The next use of brown paper bag is similar but different.

This time paint the bag before you tear it up. With this technique the use of regular paint and metallic gives it a wonderful contrast. You want to blend the colors; the main goal here is unexpected color combinations and covering all the paper. When you are finished painting and it has dried, start tearing and crumpling just like the other technique. Follow the rest of the directions to apply. Similar but this will give you a slightly different look.

What about using a combing on your walls? This is very easy and fun. It requires a base coat color. Over the base coat you apply an accent color. Keep in mind when you finish you will see the base color slightly under the top coat of paint. Be sure to add paint extender to the top coat of paint. You want the paint to stay wet longer and have a more transparent look.

Work in about 12″ wide segments ceiling to floor. Apply the top accent coat with a roller, take your comb (it works best with a large comb that all the teeth are evenly spaced), start at the ceiling put your comb with teeth on the wall and simply pull down, all the way to the floor without stopping. This will leave thin lines that show the base color underneath it. Repeat the process, when you get to the edge roll another coat of top coat paint and repeat. Always wipe the comb off after every line. This gives a textured look with a surprise of the basecoat showing through.

As always practice, practice, and practice some more before you attack the wall. In the big picture the time spent practicing is the difference from a great look that you will love and something you only kind of like.

DIY Interior Wall Painting Tips

The five biggest mistakes people make painting walls!

Painting walls tends to be easier than ceilings, they’re more accessible and it’s a matter of just pulling furniture away from the walls and covering the floor and your away. Even though painting walls is cleaner cut, mistakes can still be made. Here are the five biggest ones when you’re painting walls for your interior wall painting project.

o Lack or too little preparation. What I refer to is filling cracks and holes prior to painting. Your prep work is vital in determining the outcome and finished product of any job your doing. When it comes to painting, remember 95% is prep and 5% is finish work. You stick to that rule and you can’t possibly go wrong. OK!

o Putting too much filler or Spackle on the walls. I’ve seen some people and been to rescue missions where people have got this wrong and it looks like either a couple of things have happened, firstly it has looked like they stood back and threw it at the walls from a distance or their two year old child got into the room while they were getting coffee and had a plaster party. In which case I’ve spent hours sanding and getting the walls back to a decent surface to work with. There really is no need to over fill your walls, take your time relax have some fun throw some filler or Spackle at someone enjoy the process of preparing your walls and you say “yeah right whatever”. But seriously now just a couple of light skims if you don’t get it the first time do a second skim it will save hours of backbreaking work trust me.

o Failure to stir your paint and strain it through a stocking to remove bits of foreign junk and stuff. Just because it’s a new tin of paint and they’ve shook it up in the shop doesn’t mean it’s clean and doesn’t mean it’s stirred well. Make it a practice every time you open a tin of paint new or old to do these two important things and your walls won’t look like the surface of the moon and have bits of alien material on them.

o Painting walls with the wrong technique. When applying paint to walls GET A ROLLER OR EXTENSION POLE. Don’t roll it by hand, you need nice long strokes from the ceiling to the floor and you won’t need to work from a stepladder everything can be reached from standing. You need to put plenty on and lay it back off into the wet edge. This method allows you to keep flowing and moving without a break in your coat, allowing for a nice even consistent coat of paint… oh and don’t forget to second coat. A nice build on the wall makes for better cleaning and if you had to fill your walls prior to first coat it stops bad flashing or patchiness in the final product.

o Tool mistake – a cheap and nasty roller sleeve. Try not to go for synthetic or sponge sleeves, although the synthetic sleeve can be used if you have no other option. The problem with these sleeves is they just can’t get enough paint on and when you’re talking walls you need good flow and plenty sliding on. What you need is! and I swear by them, they are the only ones I use and have done for years THE SHEEP SKIN OR LAMBS WOOL ROLLER COVER. I personally prefer the later one myself lambskin or lambswool. It leaves me with a nice smooth finish even if I really lay the coat on heavy. Sheepskin sleeves are a bit coarser which probably makes them better for things like brickwork or rough surfaces. I use them mainly for rendered brickwork where I can put plenty on. They take a bit to load up at first but once loaded they’re smooth and easy to use. Try both synthetic and lambswool, I guarantee you’ll go to the lambswool cover, they wash out a whole tonne easier and once cleaned out properly will last you years and years. You can’t beat natural fibre products when it comes to painting walls.

Well that is all the wall painting tips I have for you today for your DIY painting project. Until next time.

The Benefits of Home Design Services

By using home design services and room space planning you can design your home as you want it and furnished with items that exactly suit each room in your house. For economic reasons, most people will not purchase all their furniture at once, but gradually, building up over time until they are happy with the final result.

Even so, there is still a need to do this with an overall plan in mind, because without this you are likely to end up with a hodge-podge of different styles and shades that you might like at the time, but that looks to visitors like what it really is – a miscellany of individual mismatched pieces.

Finding Home Design Services Online

It is better to use a profession design service than do it yourself. The best type of service to use is one offered by a furniture retailer. You can save a lot of time and effort using an online company that can provide a planning service, and then offer the furniture needed for the resultant plan.

The internet is hard to beat when hunting down your needs and giving yourself, not only a good chance of finding suitable home design services, but also one that can supply the ideal furniture to meet your plan. If you can locate an online furniture retailer that has links to a number of associated manufacturers, then you are sure to find what you are looking for.

Not only that, but if you are adding to your plan over time, you will need each piece to match irrespective of when they are purchased. By combining the two: the home design services and the furniture retailer, your vendor will be able to make sure that everything matches, even if you purchase from more than one manufacturer in your vendor’s list. There will be no ‘mismatching.’

Room Space Planning

Room space planning enables you to make the best use of the space available to you. It is far better to plan your room prior to purchasing any furniture, and then visit your furniture store armed with a list of the items you need together with optimum dimensions.

Some elements of room space planning involve how to make the best use of a small living space, or how to lay out furniture groupings for larger rooms. This relates not only to the choice of furniture itself, but also to the space between groupings.

For example, the ideal space between a sofa and a coffee table is around 15 -18 inches. Traffic space depends upon the room, although for larger rooms, the major traffic routes through the room should be in the region of 3 feet, with half that for minor routes.

Choice of Home Furniture

When choosing your home furniture, make sure it all blends together. You don’t want light oak mixed with darker woods such as mahogany, walnut or teak. Your seating should be of even height – around 18 inches give or take an inch, and fabrics should be chosen to match both the furniture and the overall room décor. Professional home design services will take care of all of this.

Keep in mind that room space planning involves a three dimensional space, and that you have more than just a floor plan to consider. A mixture of heights will give an impression of space and movement, and reflect the 3-D nature of your living space. Intelligent use of high and low items, and also of lighting and mirrors, can give a smaller room an illusion of height and depth.

Use of Accent Pieces

While your major items of furniture will provide the main emphasis of the room, home design services should include accent pieces in room space planning. Individual items of occasional furniture should not look as if they were added as an afterthought and should blend well with the overall interior design.

Thus, an entertainment center should match the general furniture, and should be situated where most convenient for the user. While a fireplace is a common focal point, the entertainment center could also be used as a focus for a second furniture grouping – particularly if it includes a TV.

A chez longue can be used as an individual piece to take up space at the end of a longer room, while side tables can be used beside individual armchairs not served by a coffee or cocktail table. At the other end you could have a beautifully polished veneer bookcase or display cabinet, or a simple console table for your telephone.

The best way is to find an online furniture supplier that also offers home design services and a room space planning service. They will be able to supply everything needed, either at once or over a period. They may even be able to modify or customize certain items to meet your specific needs. Alternatively, do it yourself, but make sure everything matches.

Free Home Design Service to Select Your Home Furnishings

There are two reasons for using a home design service: either to select the best furniture design and fabrics to suit a room’s existing decor, or to furnish a room from scratch using new furniture and furnishings, including carpets, drapes and wall coverings. The latter is the less common, due largely to the costs involved, although there are still many people that furnish a room, if not an entire home, from top to bottom.

This is particularly the case if you have purchased a new home and want to decorate it to your own tastes. In such cases you can choose your style, begin with the wall-coverings and carpet, and then seek furniture to suit – or do it the other way around. Would it not be best to combine the two and use a furniture design service to select your furniture and home furnishings so that the results looks natural, well matched and balanced?

Sure it would, and what could be better than using a free home design service offered by one of the top home furniture firms in the country? There are many furniture companies that offer a design service, and can also provide the furniture, fabrics, accessories and accent pieces to meet the requirements of their designs.

Benefits of a Free Home Design Service

Each design they offered would be focused on your specific needs, whether it is for one room or your entire home. Even if you want to furnish a room with your own major pieces, a furnishing design service such as this can recommend the occasional furniture such as individual rockers or coffee tables, and even offer help with the accent pieces such as mirrors, vases and so on. In fact, you can make use of a free home design service even if only to choose the most appropriate fabric for your sofas and chairs to match your existing room décor.

Yes, you could do it yourself, and you would likely do a good job in your own eyes, but are you sure that your taste would impress your visitors – or your neighbors? Of course, not everyone bothers what the neighbors and in-laws think, but surely it is best to have a look at what professional designers can come up with before going your own way? You are under no obligation to take their free advice – and it is a free service that many furniture stores offer.

A clash of floral designs in the drapes and the furniture fabrics can look very discordant, while a fabulous plain fabric for your sofa that matches your carpet and drapes – an even the wall-covering – could make all the difference between a beautifully designed and furnished room and a disaster!

Using a Free Floor Planner

Not that you would ever make disastrous decisions, but why not see what is possible before making your mind up? ‘Act in haste, repent at leisure’ is what they say, and nothing was ever truer. You might be surprised if you take advantage of one of the many furnishing design services available online. In fact, you could combine that with a floor planner that allows you to fit furniture thumbnails into a scale diagram of your floor.

Measure up your room and enter the measurements into the floor planner, also known as a room planner. You then get a scale plan of the floor, into which you can fit your choice of furniture. Most furniture websites that offer this form of room planning also provide scale thumbnails of each piece of furniture. So if you choose a sofa, for example, you can place it where you want it to go, and then add coffee tables and other pieces of furniture to check how they fit in.

This type of design system is brilliant for sectionals: you can choose your sectionals to make the best possible use of the space in your room, including these awkward alcoves, corners and L-shapes. You will know in advance that your choice of furniture will fit perfectly, so you have no need to return anything that you cannot fit in! You can be certain that the correct traffic space is available between individual pieces – this is particularly important if a wheelchair is involved.

If you use that service with a free home design service to select your home furnishings, you have the best of both worlds: professional designers helping you with the style and the fabrics, and the online free floor planner making sure that your choices will fit nicely into your home. Not all online furniture suppliers or outlets will offer you both of these options free of charge of course, but it sure helps if you can find those that do.

Tips To Ensure Your Residential Security

There are many simple things that you can do to ensure that your house is protected. From calling a residential locksmith to install a simple deadbolt lock to trimming your bushes, the simple home repairs and improvements that you can make to your house can be a simple way of ensuring that your house is protected and secure against burglary.

1. The simplest thing that you can do to ensure the safety of your house is by ensuring that the locking system around your house is comprehensive. Ensure that all of your windows have locks, as many windows don’t come with locks installed on them and are easily slid open by burglars. Even simple lock is more than enough to deter a burglar.

2. Change the latch lock on your doors to deadbolt locks to ensure that your doors are completely impenetrable to all but those willing to actually break down the door. Many burglars are easily able to slip a credit card between the door and jamb in order to depress the tongue of the latch, allowing them easy entrance. A deadbolt is impossible to open without the key, and you can be sure that your house will be protected if you use a deadbolt.

3. Make sure that there is not a lot of space between your door and its frame, as that is often inviting to thieves to jimmy the lock. Use plywood or paneling to ensure that there is only the space between the door and frame that is required to allow the door to open easily.

5. Some houses have the door hinges installed on the outside of the house, and you should take care to install the hinges inside the house if that is the case in your house. Having hinges on the outside is practically begging thieves to take your door off of its hinges, and you should take precautions by installing the hinges on the inside.

6. If you have a number of sliding glass doors in your house, you can easily make them impossible for burglars to open by placing a metal or wooden bar in the sliding track. If you make the bar as long as or slightly longer than the glass sliding door, you can ensure that the door cannot be opened.

7. Glass windows and sliding doors can easily be broken, and you need to take precautions against a thief desperate enough to break glass. Simply install locks that require a key to open, and you should also install fortified glass in your sliding windows.

8. Always take care of any rotting wooden door or window frames. Burglars can pry or cut through the rot fairly easily, so it is important to perform regular upkeep on your house. Not only will you ensure that it looks good, you will also be taking precautions against burglary.

9. Cover or frost your garage windows to impede the burglar’s ability to tell whether your car is inside or not. Always keep your garage door closed and tightly locked, regardless of whether your car is in the garage or not.

Brilliant Home Repair Tips

With the present slump in the housing market and foreign holidays becoming more expensive many people are investing money in their own homes. Whether it’s for home repairs or larger scale home improvements people will benefit from enjoying a more polished home whilst also increasing its value.

There has also been an increase in people making use of their gardens to grow vegetables or to use their roofs to install solar panels which again means that your home not only has added value, but over time is actually creating value! Home improvements can offset the cost of any home repairs which, unfortunately, need to be carried out on a regular basis.

So if you feel you’re up to the challenge, have recently acquired a great DIY book and have a back-up handyman as a friend (purely for back up!) then read below to see what steps you should take:

Snag List – With all Home Repairs it pays to plan ahead so the first thing you need to do is to make a full “snag list” for the entire home and garden. Maybe it’s touching up the paintwork in the hall, replacing an old skirting board, fixing a faulty socket, fixing a leaky tap or mending a broken fence. Some jobs can be quite big and others quite small, but don’t worry about that just make a full list of everything. Once you have a full list you can then begin to decide what’s most important.

Prioritise – Prioritising your jobs is the next most important step, so once you have the full snag list in your hand think about what’s most critical. For example if it’s nearing Christmas it would definitely make more sense to fix a leaking tap rather than mend a broken fence at the end of the garden – which will more than likely be covered in snow – by the time Christmas arrives! So think about what needs to be done, talk to family members, look at your budget and then put a corresponding number beside each job!

Materials – OK so now you have your full job list, and you know what jobs you want to do next, but what about the materials? Many jobs around the house like doing a paint touch up, may already have the existing supplies in the garage or attic. So take an inventory of what you have, there’s no point in buying things you already own! After that you may need to buy something, for example if you’re replacing an old floorboard or door handle you may need to go to your local hardware to buy the necessary materials.

Advice – As mentioned above its always great to have a recommended DIY book to hand but there are always some questions that only someone with experience can answer. You may have a neighbour who is quite handy, or you may have a handyman friend who you can phone but at the very least your local hardware store should always be able to give advice on a whole range of things. In fact the local hardware store is always more willing and able to offer advice than the larger depot stores, and for that reason alone we would always recommend them.

Reward – Lastly one of the great things about doing DIY and performing Home Repair jobs is the gratification you and your family will receive when finished. But also try to get other family members involved as the old saying goes “many hands make light work!” has never been more true. And it’s also a great way for children to learn about the importance of maintaining a great home whilst having some fun!
